Dr. Sponge~ Konjac Cleansing Sponge

I had been seeing this little sponge circling the green beauty blogs for a while and I didn’t really ‘get it’. I thought it may be a typical cleansing sponge, so I was unsure about all the hype. With much confusion and a little curiosity, I was excited when the kind people at Dr. Sponge contacted me! That is when all the pieces started to come together… and I fell in love.

What is Dr. Sponge?

Dr. Sponge is a sponge made up from the fibers of the Konjac plant- an exotic plant that is native to Eastern Asia. These plant fibers are rich in skin nutrients such as vitamins A, E, D, B1, B2, B6, B12, and C, Potassium, Magnesium, Zinc, Fatty acids- ETC
Sounds like a magical beauty sponge to me!

What does it do?

Dr. Sponge was originally designed to cleanse babies delicate skin and is now used to cleanse, gently exfoliate and tone all skin types. It is especially amazing for those who have sensitive or intolerant skin and are looking for an effective exfoliation method!

How do you use it?

When you first get your Dr. Sponge it will be very hard- you have to run it under water until it expands to about twice it’s size! When it feels squishy and soft- its ready to use! Gently massage around face and body to softly exfoliate and cleanse the skin. It may be used with or without your cleanser. Make sure that after each use, you rinse and hang your sponge to dry by the handy dandy string attached! With proper care, Dr. Sponge can last up to 6months! What an incredible value.

I was sent the Original Dr. Sponge (White Sponge) for Sensitive skin, Babies and Children and the Aloe Vera Facial Dr. Sponge (Green Sponge) for dry- very dry skin on the face.

photo 3(1)

The Original Dr. Sponge was extremely gentle and perfect from head to toe. I used it on my face and body after using my soap cleanser (I preferred it on my body because it was larger). I noticed a wonderful result- the Keratosis Pilaris or ‘chicken bumps’ on the back of my arms and legs were smoothed within 1 week of using the sponge. After 2 weeks they were almost completely gone! I have literally been trying everything to smooth the area since they popped up 5 months ago- scrubs, lotions, mitts, brushes… nothing smoothed them so much as Dr. Sponge! I found it a little unbelievable, because of how gentle the sponge is, but it did do the trick!

The Dr. Sponge Aloe Vera for face was a pleasure to use every day for a gentle, smooth, clean feel! It left my skin feeling invigorated and undoubtedly radiant . I noticed after only 3 uses that my skin was so smooth and hydrated. I did not feel that instant need to re-hydrate. In fact a few evenings I left my skin bare to breathe, and in the morning my skin was still soft and comfortable. Another awesome discovery? It helped with congestion in my cheek area! After a week of using the Dr. Sponge Aloe Vera– my skin texture was noticeably more refined.

My final words? I can confidently say I prefer the Dr. Sponge Konjac sponges to any other facial cleansing brush or device that I have tried so far. I can also say that I never plan to be without a Konjac Sponge- ever again! It improved the overall look and health of my skin.

They come in many different types including Charcoal for oily/combo skin types, Lycopene for mature/dry skin types, Pearl Powder for dull/ uneven skin tones and more!

Eminence Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant

strawberrydermafoliantEverything I review on my site I enjoy very much, but some things that I try, I cannot live without! The Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant by Eminence Organic Skincare is one of those cannot live without products! It is a rice based powder for all skin types that gently exfoliates the skin to reveal a smooth, radiantly clear complexion.

It is a dry powder that must be activated with water. You can mix it with your cleanser, mask or just with water alone! I personally use mine in all the above ways, and find them equally as effective! The Eminence Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant literally leaves my skin so soft and refined that my skin feels completely reborn after using it. It is so gentle that you can use it 7 days a week, although I do not recommend such frequent exfoliation (read my exfoliation article)!

I live a busy life (as we all do) and sometimes find it hard to fit in all my skincare steps. So I often will mix my mask with the Dermafoliant and get a 2 in 1! Just add equal parts mask and Dermafoliant on damp hands and massage on damp face and leave on for 15-20 minutes! Rinse and notice visibly softer, refined skin.

The Eminence Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant is loaded full of amazing skin nourishing ingredients! Read Below, I could not describe them better myself!

When you mix the powder just with water, you can really smell the Strawberry Rhubarb and it is like rubbing pie powder on your face! YUM! I absolutely love it. You use such a small amount of the powder (about a quarter size) per use, so it lasts such along time!!! This Dermafoliant is a must!!! There is nothing like it.

Simple and effective DIY mask collaboration with Habiba Da Silva

It’s nice to read reviews about products you can purchase, but it is also great to have DIY recipes that are fast, cost effective and deliver results. My fellow blogger Habiba from lifelongpercussion.blogspot.com and I decided to do a fun post and switch DIY recipes for face masks. We each picked one for the other and tested them out!

I asked Habiba to try my Milk, Honey and Rose Face Mask. This mask is designed for smoothing and soothing the complexion. Great for all skin types, but especially sensitive, dry, dehydrated and lack luster complexions.

1 TBSP of milk (Preferably whole milk)

2 TBSP of honey

1 TBSP Rosewater

(For the ingredients above, organic is the best!)

Milk- Contains Lactic acid which helps to exfoliate dead skin and reveal a smooth, radiant complexion. Also has incredible soothing qualities.

Honey- A natural humectant, it helps skin retain moisture. Honey has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties and is wonderful for soothing and gently purifying the complexion.

Rose- Powerful anti-inflammatory benefits. Aids in redness reduction and helps to increase skin circulation leading to a more even toned complexion.

Saturate a cotton round in the mask and rub liquid on the skin, wait 10-15 minutes, or until dry, rinse and reveal beautiful skin!

Habiba’s Thoughts:

I really loved how cleansed, radiant and moisturised my skin looked and felt after this mask, the surface of my skin felt much more smoother. I loved it! I will definitely be using this again! I love the toning properties  and scent of rose water too :)

Jurlique Purely White, Love Balm, Eye Makeup Remover and Purifying Mask

Welcome to my collaboration post on many Jurlique products I have been testing out lately! If you are not familiar with Jurlique, you should be! They are an Australian Spa grade Skincare brand with bio dynamically grown ingredients! With scents and extracts that will remind you of a  walking through lush floral garden, Jurlique is a true skincare experience. Let’s begin…

Jurlique Purely White Moisturizers and Serum

The Jurlique Purely White Range of products are designed for people with concerns such as hyper pigmentation, dull complexion and premature aging. With key ingredients such as Vitamin C rich Kakadu Plum, Citrus Unshiu Peel Extract and Hyaluronic acid the skin is infused with antioxidant and complexion brightening ingredients! I used the Purely Bright Serum, Day and Night moisturizer, for 3 weeks and noticed some great results!

The Purely White Radiance serum was a light weight serum gel that absorbed into the skin in seconds. It made my skin very soft without any residue.

The Purely White day and night moisturizer were incredibly lightweight and left my skin hydrated but matte to the touch! Although recommended for All skin types, I feel they are better suited for a normal/combination or oily skin. The smell is a classic Jurlique floral scent with a slight undertone of licorice. The combined ingredients left my skin smooth and bright. I do not have any serious pigmentation problems so I cannot say I noticed a decrease in pigmentation, but my overall radiance was noticeable and my redness was diffused.

Key Ingredients in the Purely White Products :

Hyaluronic Acid- Improves hydration and gives a plump appearance to the skin.

Kakadu Plum Extract– helps to reduce the appearance of pigmentation or any skin discolorations.

Citrus Unshiu Peel Extract– helps to inhibit melanin synthesis and fade existing pigmentation.

African Birch Extract– Antioxidant with skin firming qualities.

Vitamin C – Antioxidant known to help even skin tone.

Love Balm

The Jurlique Love Balm is one of those simple yet can’t live without products. A multipurpose balm that works wonders on chapped elbows, lips, hands and cuticles, or anywhere that needs a little TLC. I use the Love Balm mostly for my cuticles and lips, and is something I always have on hand… literally!

Key Ingredients in the Jurlique Love Balm:

Olive Oil, Safflower Seed Oil and Beeswax– Moisture and smoothing of the skin

Vitamin E and Soybean Oil–  Hydration and Antioxidant Protection

Bisabolol– Soothe the skin and help reduce redness or irritation

Jurlique Eye Makeup Remover

The Jurlique Eye Makeup remover is a lotion based remover that is so gentle and effective at removing makeup. I really adore this Makeup remover as it easily removes my makeup without any residue or irritation to my skin or eyes. The lotion texture allows me to either massage into my skin and eyes with my finger tips, or remove using a cotton round. Although it is marketed as an eye makeup remover, I find this product equally as effective for my face makeup, as well! It deeply nourishes and protects my skin and instead of pulling on my skin as I usually do with other makeup removers, the Jurlique eye makeup remover is so effortless it practically melts off the makeup.

Key Ingredients in the Jurlique Eye Makeup Remover:

Jojoba Oil:  Protects and Hydrates skin

Sunflower Seed Oil: Deeply hydrating and smoothing

Dandelion and Calendula Extracts: Soothe irritation and protect fragile skin

Jurlique Purifying Mask

The Jurlique Purifying mask is an awesome mask that helps to tighten pores, control oil and lift away impurities. This Clay based mask is great for those breakout prone times or when the skin is feeling congested. I noticed instantly a more refined and purified complexion, with even just one use of the mask! My pores were tighter and my skin felt clean!!! I used the mask 6 times and noticed that it really helped keep my complexion clear of blemishes. This mask also has a manual exfoliation property so it can act as your weekly exfoliant and mask, bonus!

Key Ingredients in the Purifying Mask:

Kaolin Clay: Purifies complexion and absorbs excess oil

Almond, Oats and Oat Bran: Gentle manual exfoliation

Vitamin E and C: Antioxidant skin brighteners

Chamomile Extract and Allantoin: Soothing, anti inflammatory as well as hydrating

Bailey Blush Beauty Blurb #7

Have you noticed that your skin is still dry, bumpy or tight after using a loofah or other type of body exfoliation? Do you have bumpy’s on the back of your arms or other areas? Instead of doing a straight scrub with your loofah or exfoliating cream, add a dollop of your favorite body oil as well. Adding oil will make the skin much more smooth! The exfoliation motion will allow the oil to penetrate deeper, leaving the skin fresh, smooth but best of all, hydrated!

Bailey Blush Beauty Article #1 Exfoliation

Now a days exfoliation is the number one recommendation for clear, young, healthy looking skin. Almost every skincare brand contains multiple versions of exfoliators, including granular exfoliators, exfoliating peels, exfoliating sponges, brushes and gloves. Not to mention the use of toners with cotton pads, cleansing with cloths, products with  AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids), BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acids), Vitamin A etc. which all exfoliate our skin. So the question is, does exfoliation work to better our complexion and if so, when is it too much?

A healthy skin renews (exfoliates) itself approximately every 28 days, as our skin ages this number, depending on the person, will be significantly higher. Therefore we will start to notice a dull, lackluster skin. That’s why (unless you are 10 yrs old) I believe that exfoliation is a necessary step in achieving and maintaining a healthy complexion. I do not agree however, with the excessive amount of exfoliation that most skincare companies or people claim is recommended or needed to achieve beautiful skin. I also do not agree with many of the exfoliation methods being recommended.

Exfoliation takes away dead skin and allows faster cell growth, to reveal smoother, softer skin. When a person exfoliates too much, the skin does not have the opportunity to repair itself, it also irritates the skin (whether obvious or not) and causes a major imbalance to the skins natural rhythm.  Our bodies, skin included, are made to work within a rhythm, skin begins over producing oils to compensate from over exfoliation, and eventually becomes lazy and relies on exfoliation to become smooth and glowing. You can logically understand that by over exfoliation, we are thinning the skin, which in turn does the opposite of what we want, making the skin fragile, sensitive, dehydrated and oily, blotchy, wrinkled, and just all around NOT good. I have seen this numerous times in my career, many women coming to me with all these symptoms, and the main reason is OVER EXFOLIATION.

My belief and recommendation for exfoliation is as follows, normal/dry/combination/sensitive skin, once a week MAX. You could even go for once every 2 weeks, depending on the skin and it’s condition. For Combination/Oily/Acne prone skin, twice a week MAJOR MAX. But ideally once a week. This can include manual exfoliation, peel, or cleansing brush, cloth or sponge. If you are using a face wash, toner, moisturizer or serum containing an AHA, BHA, Retinol or any other kind of exfoliating ingredient, I do not recommend additional exfoliation. Please remember that if you feel that you need to exfoliate more, use your toner on a cotton pad, the gentle motion over the skin is enough.

For many over-exfoliators this recommendation may seem ridiculous, at first you skin may feel bumpy, dull, dirty etc. Give it 2-3 months and notice the overall improvement in your skin, less need for exfoliation, and more even, smooth, hydrated and balanced skin.

Please avoid chemical peels, harsh microdermabrasions, look up fail pics of these treatments, and then you will know why. Of course, only use natural/ organic exfoliators, including peels. Remember to be gentle when exfoliating, you are not sanding wood.

Stay tuned for several different reviews on my fave exfoliators!!!
